Notes- Design: The Principals and Elements
What is Design?
- Design elements are the basic units of a visual image
-The principals of design govern the relationships of the elements used and organize the composition as a whole
-All imagery, art, design, and photography alike, are comprised of elements that can be broken down and analyzed. This goes for web design as well

Design Elements-
-space
-line
-color
-shape
-texture
-value

Space can...
exist in two or three dimensions
be positive/negative
refer to foreground and background
Line -
can be organic
it varies
can be an illusion(negative space)
Shape
helps us identify and create “links” in our minds
some can be very geometric, and some can be very organic (triangle vs. circle)
Texture
lines can imply that there is texture
can create depth and draw the eye to a certain place
Value
refers to the difference between light and dark areas

Design Principals-

Unity
-creates a sense of order, a consistency, in size and shape
-Proximity can create a sense of unity, and it can also show a lack of untiy

Variety
-Same type of objects, just different variations
Repetition
-Same image, different colors
Harmony
-what we get when things look like they’re in their place-- “meant to be”
Proximity
-Alignment and spacing is key to effectively displaying information
Proportion
Changes the relations of elements in designs
Functionality- Form or Function?
Does it serve a purpose? Does it have a function?
How well does it communicate?
