Logo Comparison
1. What are the major differences in these 2 versions?
In the 2nd version, I notice the text more. The type is bolder, and stands out, whereas in the first version, it's hard to find, and notice at the first look. There is good contrast in the second version which makes the design work more.
2. What design issue caused a change in the final artwork?
The lines are more defined, and everything is bolder. The final design looks cleaner, and more balanced than the first. I also like how the focus is mainly on the record, and "mix show" so you know what the company/design is about.

The History of the Starbucks Logo
Over time, Starbucks has developed many different design styles for their logo. Since 1971 there has been many changes to the logo. The Starbucks logo is considered to be one of the most recognized logos. Starbucks itself, and it's logo were founded on March 30th, 1971. Starbucks began in Seattle, Washington.
The logo is a twin-tailed mermaid, or a siren (greek mythology). The logo has been significantly streamlined over the years. In the first version, which was based on a 16th-century "Norse" woodcut, the Starbucks siren was topless and had a fully visible double fish tail. The image also had a rough visual texture. In the second version, which was used from 1987–92, her breasts were covered by her flowing hair, but her navel was still visible. The fish tail was cropped slightly, and the primary color was changed from brown to green, a nod to the Alma Mater of the three founders, the University of San Francisco. In the third version, used between 1992 and 2011, her navel and breasts are not visible at all, and only vestiges remain of the fish tails. The original "woodcut" logo has been moved to the Starbucks' Headquarters in Seattle. The vintage logo sparked some controversy due in part to the siren's bare breasts, but the temporary switch garnered little attention from the media. Starbucks had drawn similar criticism when they reintroduced the vintage logo in 2006. The logo was altered when Starbucks entered the Saudi Arabian market in 2000 to remove the siren, leaving only her crown. In January 2011, Starbucks announced that they would make small changes to the company's logo, removing the Starbucks wordmark around the siren, enlarging the siren image, and making it green.
The current logo still contains some elements of previous logos. The twin-tailed mermaid is still a component of the newly designed logo, but only part of the mermaid is shown. The new logo is more modern, and simple. The colors are bolder, versatile, and contrasting. The new logo is simple, but elegant.
*The First picture is the Original Starbucks logo created in 1971
*The Second is the "green logo" used from 1992-2011, still being used as a secondary logo.
*The Third picture is the redesigned logo used from 2011-present.
